14/01/09 Snape Maltings - now heated by Biomass

Energy Innovations, an expanding biomass heating company based near Saxmundam in Suffolk, has commissioned a state-of-the-art heating system at the redevelopment at Snape Maltings. The industry leading wood-chip boiler which is manufactured in Austria will provide heating to all areas of the residential – 19 houses in the first phase – and retail redevelopment at Snape.

Managing Director of Energy Innovations, Nat Bacon commented at the switch-on event: “We have worked closely with Snape Maltings owner Johnny Gooderham to devise and install the best and most practical biomass heating solution, ensuring a cost effective and reliable system for both commercial and residential use. This project is exciting as it not only benefits from the market leading technology of the Gilles Woodchip Boiler, but it also features a 150 cubic metre below-ground store. This enables large, cost effective bulk deliveries to be taken.”

Johnny Gooderham remarked: “In the wake of English Heritage naming the Snape Maltings conservation project as one of the best in England, we are very pleased that we now have such an energy efficient heating system up and running. Reducing our carbon footprint on such an historic site was always going to be a challenge and this boiler, using woodchip from local forestry, is doing just that.”

Nat Bacon concluded: “These boilers are totally automated for woodchip transfer, ignition and ash removal. The system is able to match the base heating and hot water demands of the properties through all the seasons. The carbon savings are significant. An alternative oil system will produce over 400 tonnes of CO2 per annum, while the 550kW boiler is almost carbon neutral, displacing all of the emission.”
