During recent renovation work of the clubhouse, the owner decided to look at alternative ways of heating the club house to tackle the high heating bills produced by the heat demand of the buildings and the cost of fuel on the Isle of Man. Woodchip heating was the only practical, green solution which could produce all hot water and heating, reduce the carbon footprint of the complex and reduce bills.

THE FUEL STORE

With an automated wood-chip system the positioning of the fuel store needs to be adjacent to the boiler room. The positioning of this store is important as fuel deliveries need to be as simple as possible and will often dictate the positioning of the boiler room within the site. A simple method of unloading the fuel will result in a reduction of fuel costs as it removes the need for specialist equipment.

In this case the boiler room is positioned against a 4m high cliff, the top of which has good access. The store has been built in such a way that a lorry can tip straight into the store, eliminating the need for any handling equipment on site.

The middle photo shows detail of the doorboards that allow the fuel level to be monitored and, if necessary, emptied in an emergency.

In addition to the cell wheel (a solid cast steel continuous barrier between the boiler and fuel store), the boiler has various thermostatic valves which control mains pressure water to cool the heat exchanger and act as fire extinguishers for the fuel transport system.

THE BOILER

Energy Innovations installed a 240kW biomass boiler into the Mount Murray Golf Centre clubhouse. The HPK-UTSK boiler is highly robust, allowing it to run on a wide range of fuel grades - up to G50 spec woodchips at a moisture content of up to 50% - with automatic heat exchanger cleaning and de-ashing minimising cleaning and maintenance down time. The boiler is run by an electronic control unit which can be accessed through a modem link enabling Energy Innovations to monitor the boiler ensuring consistent efficient performance.

The automation of fuel feeding allows the boiler to increase or reduce the amount of fuel it burns to match demand, enabling better fuel economy.

By installing a Gilles HPK-UTSK the owners of Mount Murray Golf and Country Club can expect to save at least 125 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and has reduced their heating bills by some 70%.
