Biomass District Heating Pipe

Please take note of the following instructions when unloading pipes or components as correct handling is essential to the health and safety of operatives.

Incorrect handling can also cause serious damage to the pipework:-

Approved equipment must always be used for unloading straight and flex pipes

Unloading Flex Pipes

  • Flex pipes may be lifted using straps or a fork-lift truck. If a strap is not used, the forks must be protected by using protective padding over the tines. Please contact the supplier for further advice if required
  • If straps are used, they must be of fabric or nylon (never use steel wire)
  • Flex pipes must never be rolled direct from the lorry
  • The pipes must never be dragged across hard or stoned surfaces
  • Flex pipes must only be unrolled onto a stone-free surface
  • Never cut the retaining straps from the coil in the absence of trained engineer

  • Lifting straps must be positioned in such a way that the carrier pipe ends are not damaged
  • When unloading large pipe sizes, a lifting yoke is recommended
  • Fabric or nylon straps, 100-150 mm in width, should be used in order to prevent the jacket pipe from being damaged
  • Pipes may be handled by fork-lift truck if the following conditions are observed:
  1. the forks must be clean and have no sharp edges
  2. the forks must not be ”forced” into the stack of pipes
  • Pipes and fittings must never be rolled or pulled across the ground, or lifted by means of steel wires, steel straps or chains
